Hi - Great article. Can you recommend a list of specific dog foods to prevent bloat or a web site which would have this information? Is dry food okay? Is canned food better for preventation? Thanks Bob

Amy Samida

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your comments! A few of the kibbles I recommend to my clients are Evo, Canidae, and California Natural. These are all good, and there are many others. The biggest thing to remember is that you don't want a fat or citric acid listed in the first four ingredients. Canned food can be prohibitively expensive if you have a large dog, although your dog would probably love it or at least appreciate a small amount added to her food. You could also add a little cottage cheese or ground beef. You can safely replace up to 1/3 of the kibble with fresh foods without upsetting the nutrient balance. The scary thing about bloat is that even by following all of the recommendations, your dog can still bloat. So do what you can and keep your fingers crossed.

Thank you so much for reading my blog!

I, too, have read that fat should not be one of the four top ingredients in dry food when trying to prevent GDV. The dry foods recommend above, by Amy Samida, however, all have fat as the 2nd most prevalent ingredient by percentage. I need clarification about this, maybe I don't understand what "fat" is?? Thank you.

From what I just researched, Purina One, my dog's kibble (for seniors 7+) has no fat or citric acid in first four ingredients, and I believe it has no citric acid whatsoever. That sure does relieve my worries as I do not have the bag present.

Behavioral research discloses that human relations at work are just easier, perhaps because they are more regular and predictable and thus simpler to adjust to than the sporadic, the more intense and less regular relationship in the community.
